Slow Season: My 4 Cozy Rituals for Calm & Comfort

As I get older, I’ve realized how much joy I find in life’s simple comforts, a good book, a warm drink, soft blankets, and my pups by my side. These aren’t just random habits; they’ve become my rituals, small, intentional moments that help me slow down and feel grounded.

Here are my four favorite cozy rituals that I live by, with a few of my go-to tools and products that make them extra special.

1. Mindful Mug

I’ve always been an early riser, part by nature, part because of my inability to sleep in, and for the last decade, I’ve started my mornings with what I call my Mindful Mug routine.

I fill a big mug with my favorite decaf coffee + collagen + oat milk combo, then take my time enjoying it in the quiet. I focus on the smell, taste, and feel of each sip, letting it ease me into the day before I start thinking about my to-do list.

My favorites for this ritual:

2. Sensory Grounding

Living with anxiety means I’ve had to learn skills to anchor myself in the present, especially when I’m overwhelmed, restless, or disconnected. My go-to method is the 5-4-3-2-1 technique:

  • 5 things you can see

  • 4 things you can feel (the softness of a blanket, the warmth of a fire)

  • 3 things you can hear (rain outside, a clock ticking)

  • 2 things you can smell

  • 1 thing you can taste

This simple practice pulls me back into the now. It might take a couple of tries on busy days, but it’s worth it.

Helpful tools for grounding:

3. Blanket Burrito

Mindfulness, but make it cozy.

Before I watch my favorite shows, I like to wrap myself up, a full-on blanket burrito, with a heated eye mask (great for dry eyes) and either my favorite fleece blanket or a weighted one. I just focus on my breath and let myself completely relax.

My favorite blankets & eye masks:

4. Wind Down Hour

We all hear about “sleep hygiene,” but between busy schedules and screen time, it’s hard to create a real wind-down routine. When I do, my sleep (and mood) noticeably improves.

I try to give myself one screen-free hour before bed: dim the lights, play soft music, and do something relaxing. It might be:

  • Reading a physical book or listening to an audiobook

  • Taking a warm bath with essential oils or bath bombs

  • Gentle stretching or restorative yoga

  • Practice a guided meditation or mindfulness exercise to let go of lingering thoughts
