Midlife Musings: Anxiety and the 3am Mind
Lately, sleep has become unpredictable. I’ll wake at 1, 2, sometimes 3 a.m., heart racing like I’ve been startled awake by an alarm only I can hear. My body feels hot, my thoughts restless — as if morning has arrived early. During the day, I manage the usual anxieties of work, life, and my creative projects. But nighttime anxiety is different. It’s quiet, physical, and hard to reason with. I’ve learned it’s not just me — midlife hormones, stress, and a sensitive nervous system can collide at 3 a.m. Still, I’m finding small ways to soften the edges of those dark hours.
